Modus Ordo

Questions, answered

Straight answers about cost, the AI, privacy, school and using the app. Each answer is short; the linked pages go deeper.

The basics

What is Modus Ordo?

Modus Ordo is a free study planner and school organiser for senior high-school students. Your timetable, homework, assessments, notes and study sessions live in one place, and a small cast of AI helpers plans around them.

Open it and it tells you what to do right now. Everything else is organised into tables, boards and a week you can read at a glance.

Who is it for?

Students in Years 10 to 12. It’s built around Queensland’s QCAA system first (subjects, internal assessments, external exams, syllabus dot points), but the planner, tasks, notes and study sessions work for any school. More for QCAA students.

Is it finished?

It’s an early build. The screens and tools are real and you can use them: Today, Plan, Tasks, Sessions, Goals, Library, Progress, To confirm and History, with Undo on changes.

The AI isn’t switched on yet, so the cast’s replies are examples, and the app labels them that way. Each feature page has a table of what’s built and what’s still to come.

What’s the preview?

Try the preview runs the real app in your browser. You set up as a new student, take the Manager’s short tour, then explore the week of Sam Reyes, a fictional Year 11 student. Click around, move things, ask the Manager for a change and undo it.

It needs no account, and nothing you do is saved: reload the page and it starts over.

How do I make an account?

You can’t yet. Sign-in and new accounts are switched off while the app is being built. Join the beta list and we’ll email you when the beta starts.

Cost and the AI

Is it really free?

Yes. There’s no paid plan and no ads. The only part that can cost money is the AI, which runs on your own key from an AI provider, and you can turn the AI off. How it’s free.

Do I need an AI key?

No. Without a key the app still works as a planner, task list, notebook and study timer. The app’s own words for what changes: no chat (you change things with buttons), a basic plan from fixed rules, sessions with no help in them, and marking against the answers yourself.

With a key, the cast can chat, plan, tutor and mark. Right now, in this early build, the cast’s AI isn’t switched on yet, so its replies are examples. Getting a key, step by step.

How much does the AI cost?

It depends on the provider you choose and how much you use it. A usual month is roughly US$10 to 18 on the defaults, or US$1 to 3 on Lowest cost. Providers charge by use and their prices change, so check their own pricing pages. In the app you set a monthly limit (it starts at US$20 a month, at most), and you set another at the provider. Capping what it can cost.

I’m under 18. Can I get a key?

Most AI providers need the account holder to be 18 or older; check the provider’s current terms. Ask a parent or carer to set up the key with you (setup gives you a one-time link to send them), or keep the AI off: everything that doesn’t need it still works. What a parent or carer needs to know.

Will the AI do my assignments for me?

No. The Tutor is built to ask before it tells and not to write assessed work. Draft feedback is comments beside your text; it doesn’t edit your words. Your school sets the rules about AI for assessment, so check them, and ask your teacher if you’re not sure.

Privacy and safety

Where is my stuff kept?

In a database in Sydney, Australia, hosted by Supabase. Every table is locked to its owner, so other accounts can’t read your plans, notes or chats. The website and the app are delivered through Cloudflare’s network. Privacy and safety has the details, including what’s still being built.

I’m under 15. Can I sign up?

Please look around the preview first: it needs no account. Ask a parent or carer before you join the beta list. An age check, with a parent or carer confirming for younger students, is on the still being built list.

Can my teachers or parents see my stuff?

No. There’s no teacher view and no parent view. Your account is yours.

Does this website track me?

No. This website sets no cookies and loads no analytics, ads or third-party scripts. The fonts and images come from this site.

School is getting on top of me. Who can I talk to?

You don’t have to handle it alone. Kids Helpline is 1800 55 1800 (ages 5 to 25, phone or webchat) and Lifeline is 13 11 14, any time. If you’re not safe right now, call 000. Your school counsellor or a teacher you trust can help too. The app keeps these numbers on a fixed safety card.

School and study

Does it connect to my school portal?

No, and it won’t: school portals can’t be connected reliably. Work comes in from typing, quick capture, the Manager, your class notes and the Info Dump.

Which subjects does it know?

18 QCAA General subjects so far, each with its own colour: English, Literature, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Engineering, Digital Solutions, Modern History, Geography, Economics, Legal Studies, Visual Art, Music and Japanese. There’s also a Personal category for things outside school. Other subjects aren’t in the list yet.

Does it work outside Queensland?

The planner, tasks, notes and study sessions work for any school. Terms, assessment names and the syllabus features are built around QCAA first.

Will it raise my ATAR?

No app can promise a grade or a rank. What Modus Ordo can do is help you keep assessments on schedule, put revision where your weak spots are, and show you honestly how each subject is going.

Using it

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It runs in your phone’s browser, with a bottom bar for Today, Plan, Tasks, quick capture and the Manager.

Can I use it on a school laptop?

Yes. It runs in a normal browser tab, with nothing to install and no extension. Ctrl Shift H hides the screen in a second if classmates are looking.

Does it work offline?

Not yet in the hosted version: it needs a connection. Offline use is planned.
